Threats of alienative enforcement of normative standards also inhibit pleasures. The more intimate and private are personal relationships the more inhibitive are the normative standards and effort to maintain them. Alienation may be occasioned by interjected normative standards which occasion self-imposed self-alienation, or mutual alienation within intimacies of two that have accepted and internalized implicit social judgments. Alienation does not depend only upon overt intrusion into a private relationship---it may be occasioned by the private acceptance of exclusive normative standards of social propriety and success. Alienation is occasioned by accepting such standards as proper within the context of intimate/private personal relationships. Social relationships are not essentially objective in nature. The essential nature of social relationships cannot be sustained by standards which are not congruent with the essential nature of social relationships; e.g., objective normative standards for social relationships do not sustain the essential nature of social relationships --- because of the lack of congruence between objective and subjective realities. The more subjective is a reality---the less central may objective realities be in sustaining the reality in an exclusive manner. Exclusive sustenance must be congruent to be helpful. Exclusive "support" tends to be violent and alienative. Social expectations and relationships become especially perverse and alienative for people who accept the assumption that all social pleasures must be based upon social approval in terms of normative social standards. Such people have no private basis for conviction, commitment, evaluation, pleasure, etc. They are especially vulnerable to any charismatic deviant person who transcend their assumptions---and so is able to lead them into alienative, destructive, violent, and frustrating patterns of behavior. When everybody must look to everybody else for validation---where can it originate but with someone who does not accept the social norms? When deviance is regarded as the ultimate evil--- deviance is given ultimate power by those who regard it as the ultimate evil; by creating deviance they give it power. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
