The thoroughly rational person is embarrassed by
instincts and passions, for in their primitive forms they
are not thoroughly rational, and therefore not good. It
is necessary, therefore, that instincts and passions be
thoroughly rationalized, so that they may appear to be the
expression of rational considerations---without the
ecstasy of instinctive passion. As a proof of the success
of the rationalization process, analysis of behavior leads
to the conclusion that it is good, rather than ecstasy
occasioning the conviction that it is desirable. Desire
is replaced by conclusions, ecstasy by logic; and all is
in order with its predictability. Thus, security comes
from predictability, not from love with passion. Those
who are insecure because they do not know love, seek
security in the predictability of a thoroughly
rationalized world. Through rationalization, organization,
systematization, legalization, etc. they seek to
compensate for the lack of love; and then try to
rationalize their failures, and further try to perfect
their systems. Their insecurity drives them to seek
perfection, and to reject all that is not perfect; for in
the absence of love any imperfection may be the grounds
for rejection. They even seek perfection in the detection
of imperfection, for to be secure one must be perfect in
every way conceivable; one would not want to be rejected
for failing to detect imperfection. Only perfect people
who can detect all imperfections can be secure in a
loveless world conceived in rationality, rather than in
the passionate expression of instincts.
The perfectly rational world which is occasioned by
perfectly rational behavior is of course not emotionally
satisfying to many people. Their frustrations occasion
imperfect behavior, and the need to perfect rational
systems to motivate them to behave in rational ways.
Systems are designed to repress instincts, desires,
perceptions, speculations, thoughts, etc. to assure
rational behavior. Failures to achieve thoroughly
rational behavior are rationalized as due to the
imperfections in the rebellious deviants, and efforts are
made to diagnose their diseases, and to cure them of their
deviant (diseased) behavior.
