Such courses are the traditional introductory physics courses for physics majors. Physicists tend to respect such courses. Other courses teach students about physics, without teaching them to analyze, behave, and feel like physicists do. Physicists tend not to respect such courses. There are virtually no courses which teach students about physicists---to help students gain perspective regarding the history, philosophy, assumptions, biases, and politics of physicists' analyses, behavior, and feelings. In particular, such courses about physicists are not part of the professional training of college and university physics teachers---they teach without the benefit of broad perspectives such courses might offer. As a result, college and university physics teachers thoughtlessly pass on values and emotional life-styles of research physicists, regardless of whether or not such values and emotional life-styles are appropriate to their students. Physicists focus virtually all the attention of their students upon the cognitive content of textbooks which summarize the theoretical mathematical relationships which summarize the conclusions arrived at by analysis of numerous meter readings in carefully designed and controlled experiments. Physics teachers routinely ignore the historical, personal, social, emotional context in which the laws of physicists were formulated and agreed to. The nature of the political process and how people have felt about the political process of physicists formulating the laws of physicists, these are not discussed in physicists' classes. Physics students who want to learn about physicists will probably have to seek assistance in sociology, philosophy, and linguistics departments. Physicists do not have liberating perspectives upon their own natures; they are too close to the objects of consideration to have meaningful insights. Their manner of study of physicists is inappropriate to receiving a meaningful way of regarding physicists. Only a personal and trans- disciplinary way of regarding physicists will offer physics students insights into the nature of physicists. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
