Improper questions sometimes invade the privacy of the target of the question, and violate the person's right to be themselves---rather than conform to others' violent expectations; i.e., the expectations violate the person's integrity. Improper questions are sometimes rhetorical ways of making accusations---suggesting improprieties by raising doubts through questioning. To accept the suggestions seriously and to attempt to defend one's self is to internalize the questions and become victim of them. It is more helpful to expose the improper aspects of such questions, and so expose the violent aspects of the questioner's behavior. Improper questions are sometimes just devices to expose another person's ignorance, to make a fool of them. Such questions are not asked to learn anything, but to do violence to the target of the question. In the same manner some questions are improperly asked to make fun of a person. Such improper questions should be exposed, and the consequences of them made clear. Some improper questions are improper because of the improper assumptions which are concealed in the formulation of the question. The question in effect declares an assumption to be true by how it is implicitly taken for granted. "Does grape jelly taste better than hamburger?" suggests that it is proper to make a comparison and also suggests that there exists an objectively correct statement of the nature of the difference and the value of paying attention to the difference. Far better to ask, "Given a choice between grape jelly and hamburger in such and such a situation which would you choose?: In a more abstract, yet an important way, consider the question, "Is God a male or a female?" The question suggests that God is a reproducing organism with sexual organs and characteristics which are much like those of human males or like those of human females; or at least that God shares in the sexual dispositions of human beings. A string of words may appear to be a question, yet hardly qualify. If a piece of paper has written on it only, "All statements on this piece of paper are false. Are all statements on this piece of paper false?" Is the latter string of words a proper question? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
