For this reason people who deliberately use excommunication as a technique by which to manipulate people tend to generate alienation which it is difficult to avoid. There are no effective technical defenses against excommunicative technologies. To minimize instances of excommunication non- technical ways of coping must be followed. Following non- technical ways may guide people in the use of some techniques to facilitate dialogue, but such guidance will not originate in technical considerations. Rarely is the promotion of open dialogue regarded as of ultimate concern. Yet, it is helpful to view much human behavior as at root an effort to avoid excommunication. The avoidance of excommunication appears to be an ultimate concern, even though the promotion of dialogue does not. Even though the two are very much alike, they do not appear to be so in everyday life. To avoid excommunicative guilt people will be dishonest about their feelings, pretending to feel quite differently than they do. That they are trying to avoid excommunication is obscured by the resultant break-down in dialogue---a form of excommunication. The excommunicative effect is clearly not the intended effect. To avoid excommunication people will fail to be open with judgmental self-righteous people; and thereby excommunicate themselves from the people who might excommunicate them if they were open. It is a double bind which obscures the motives and the effects. The participants in the double bind seek to develop coping techniques to deal with their problem, and end up developing techniques which intensify the problem. The way to minimize excommunication is to engage in efforts to create contexts within which people are granted unquestioned rights to be safely open and honest in dialogue, contexts in which honesty may never leads to punishment. Such efforts will be effective if they are not selfish efforts to avoid excommunication. At the same time it is essential that those engaged in them survive excommunicative acts. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
