They are taught by example to feel strongly about scholarly work of great sophistication, and to admire those who excel in such work to the exclusion of other concerns. The few times that their role models become emotional---pertain to scholarly achievements, insights, perceptions, and recognitions. The passions are directed towards reasonable foci of concern. College and university teachers are instructed that it is their duty to teach students, most of whom are not fit material for scholarly work. It is an onerous duty because the students do not merit respect because they are not fit for the scholarly work which is the proper focus of emotional involvement. The teachers find it hard to become emotionally involved in helping such unfit students. The teachers have been taught not to sympathize with the students---unless the students show and aptitude for excellent work in scholarly work which is a fit focus for emotional involvement. At the same time they have been taught that it is their duty to teach the unfit students for whom they have no feelings. In keeping with the fragmentive graduate school instructions---the administrators in colleges and universities evaluate college and university teachers according to criteria which mirror the graduate school fragmentation. The items of evaluation pertain to cognitive concerns---to the exclusion of emotional and personal concerns which are basic to students' ability to learn. the evaluation procedures indicate that they duty is to teach---and that emotional rapport is unimportant. Patterns of retention, promotion, and tenure decisions encourage teachers to continue to feel passionately about scholarly work and research publications, and not to become intimately involved with students as persons. These fragmentive tensions are probably greatest in liberal arts colleges that publish statements of purpose which ring an integrative tone---and then march off to the music played by the prestigious research-oriented institutions which grant the research oriented Ph.D. degrees required of college and university teachers.
