Scientists in their laboratories focus their attention only upon the behavior of systematically planned and controlled experiments and rarely find anything which they did not expect to find, because they created the context within which to discover whatever they realize. The attitudes, emotions, desires, presuppositions, and fears which guide the research through which scientific discoveries are made. In that manufactured context many personal discoveries are nearly impossible -- - because they are contextually inappropriate. The discoveries of scientists are as much a matter of personal choice as of objective reality. Scientists' priorities do much to determine their perceptions of the nature of reality. The myth of objectivity does not insure that their discoveries will be independent of their personal priorities. The myth may blind scientists to the ways in which their personal choices create the contexts which determine the appearance of reality to them. Thus the "objective world" which scientists have "discovered" has been as much of a fabrication of scientists' choices and imaginative creativity --- as it has been "out there" waiting --- independent of scientists' efforts for them to come to the "objective world" and discover its nature as a reality independent of how scientists choose to approach it. The scientists' approach to reality is essentially one of controlled experimentation. Without control there is little hope of scientific discovery. How then can one scientifically discover the essence of persons and personal relationships? If the essence of persons and meaningful personal relationships involves the absence of control, then it is impossible to analyze the person/relationships according to the paradigms of the scientific analysts. Scientific/objective analysis, predictions, and efforts at control of persons/relationships are not likely to be meaningful or helpful because of faulty presuppositions. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
