Because of their hyper-analytic and hyper-objective training many scientists encounter difficulties in self perception and self understanding. They seek to be logical, consistent, systematic, and unbiased as they attempt to achieve objective self perception and self understanding. Self can not logically be both subject and object at the same time, and to a high degree. Objectivity and subjectivity can not be perfected and realized simultaneously with regard to any one focus of attention. The more personal the focus of attention --- the more meaningless it is to attempt to understand on the basis of objectivity and logical analysis; the more so also when the focus pertains to self, rather then to less intimate others. Scientists tend to reach for familiar paradigms when trying to gain personal understanding of themselves and their relationships with other people. The dominant paradigms of scientists involve objectivity and logical analysis as essential features, and so the tools the scientists choose tend not to be appropriate to understanding the personal situations in which they find themselves. Research scientists specialize in objective and analytic paradigms. Graduate schools in which scientists get their training are dominated by research scientists, with effective teaching being a secondary consideration when it comes to retention, promotion, tenure, and pay increases. Nobel Prizes are not handed out for excellence in science teaching, but for outstanding contributions to pure research. The result is that science teachers focus their attention on objective/analytic paradigms most of their time, and approach their students with the research paradigms still operating in their central processors. The concepts which are dominant in pure research are like subroutines of a computer program --- which continue to reside in the central processor and get in the way of relating to students as subjects, rather than as objects to be analyzed, controlled, and modified according to some grand system.
