They do not want to be embarrassed by acting joyful when there are inadequate grounds for being joyful. To behave as if something is true, when it is in reality not true, is dishonest if you know it is not true, and reveals your ignorance if you do not know. Thus, it is important to determine whether or not there are grounds for being joyful, before behaving joyfully. Some people are joyful because they desire to live in a joyful community and decide to do that which is in their power to create a joyful community. By their decisions and actions they realize that which they desire, make it real. They know that many realities are realized by decision, rather than by discovery. They realize that joy is a reality which is realized by decision more than by discovery, by acceptance more than by determination; that joy is not an objective reality subject to verification and measurement. At the same time joy is not manufactured, made by men for women, and guaranteed to be of high quality. Some people seek to create joy by manufacturing, selling, and buying consumer goods and services. They greatly stimulate the economy and the consumption of scarce natural resources---without necessarily realizing joy. Often their efforts are frantic and sophisticated, as well as being impressive because of the magnitude of the effort and the number of people involved. It is difficult to believe that so many sophisticated and busy people can be dead wrong. Their efforts are profitable and respected---even though they are not joyful. After all, they do not have objective grounds for being joyful. Joy is something that they thoughtlessly expect to arrive when they have reached the peak of success which is just peaking over the horizon. So they rush to reach the objective place where they believe joy resides, and seek to help others reach that place. By arriving together they will know when they have objective grounds for joy, and so avoid embarrassment. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
