This is especially true if the questions are hypothetical and are based upon mutually inconsistent assumptions. The student must get clearly in mind one set of assumptions and answer the question which is based upon that one set of assumptions before moving on to consider the next set of assumptions (which may be inconsistent with the first set of assumptions) and the question which is based upon the second set of assumptions. There must be clarity as to which set of assumptions go with which question, and clarity that there are different assumptions upon which the different questions are based. To mix up questions is to mix up incongruous assumptions. The questions must be taken up one at a time, and there may be misleading order in which they can be taken up. Thus, not only must they be considered one at a time, there may be an order in which to consider them which is the only fruitful order in which to consider them. In solving some problems, such as problems of motion in physics, questions may differ with regard to what information is given and what is to be inferred. In one problem the student may be given a distance, initial velocity, and time; and be asked to infer the acceleration. In another problem the student may be given the acceleration, initial velocity, and time; and be asked to infer the distance. If a student tries to think about both problems simultaneously there will be confusion generated by the differing roles played by distance and acceleration in the two problems; their roles are reversed in the two problems. The student needs to be aware of the different structures of the two problems. Other difficulties arise if two problems of differing modality are tackled simultaneously. There will be a tendency to treat both problems within the same mode of approach. Thus it is especially difficult to deal with a single problem which has two inseparable aspects, one of which is affectional and the other of which is technical.
