The process of rationalization may have obscured the fear, anxiety, alienation, and unmet human needs which motivated the participants. Through objectification the participants may have come to perceive the conflict as residing outside of themselves in the objective world, when its roots and substance reside in their perverted and repressed affectional relationships. Through idealization the participants may have projected their internal affectional conflicts into the domain of conflicts between high ideals. Their clash of ideals may be an image of internal clashing of affectional needs and social constraints upon the fulfillment of their affectional needs. In such instances the participants are unlikely to perceive in any helpful way the basic values, issues, motivations, and causes of conflict---and so be inept at conflict resolution, reconciliation. Issues may be clarified in part by clarification of values, motivations, and basic human needs. It is helpful to have a common understanding of the processes of human relationships. The understanding of conflict thus depends upon the various understandings which participants have of the basic structure of human decisions. Conflict may originate in differences between the understandings of the basic structure of human relationship and be regarded as a natural and normal aspect of human relationships. The common understanding may in hidden ways set the stage for tragic conflict which the common understanding seeks to avoid. In fact it is possible for the common paradigm designed to avoid conflict to itself be the root of the conflict which it is designed to avoid; e.g., excommunicating non-conformists who inject disagreement, as a means of reducing conflict. Issue clarification depends critically upon the ultimate purposes of those who seek to clarify issues: personal advancement, revenge, ego satisfaction, compensation, political power, financial gain, exchange of personal favors, intellectual satisfaction, fulfillment of childhood fantasies, and visions, etc. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
