Perfectionists have little experience in coming to terms with their own failures, for via collusions they are unaware of their own failures. Because they have refused to perceive their own failures they are not experienced in coming to terms with them. Perfectionists can not be role models to students in need of exemplars of dealing with failures with integrity. Perfectionists tend to be oriented to external expectations, and to internalized expectations occasioned by others. Perfectionists do not seek to fulfill perfectly. Thus the goal of perfectionists can not be meaningfully realized. It can be realized only via collusions which are failures to cope openly and honestly. Via collusions such failures are not acknowledged. Perfectionists do not openly and honestly cope with the failures implicit in their collusions. For this reason perfectionist teachers do not serve to liberate their students from the bondage of professional collusions. Such teachers are prisoners of their professional collusions and can not liberate their students. Their person who can not cope meaningfully with failure is not mature and not free. Such a person can not learn from failure, and stops growing. Life tends to be meaningless to people who can not cope meaningfully with failure---because life is full of what people perceive to be failures. To cope meaningfully with failures we must perceive differently. That which is failure in one mode of perception is a learning experience in another mode of perception. To cope meaningfully with failures is to perceive the experiences of life as opportunities to grow through open communication, rather than to try to appear to be in conformity with some ideal. People who are growing through all their experiences serve as role models for students who seek to learn to cope with what they regard as failures. As they grow they learn through all their experiences. They experience fewer and fewer failures because of how they regard their experiences. They cease to be embarrassed by their experiences, and share them more openly. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
