In unspoken ways it is made clear that certain topics, perceptions, and questions are not to be brought up---because they so obviously need to be brought up, and none of the responsible members of the sub-culture ever bring them up. They are very systematically ignored, even though ever present. Any hint of them brings deadly non-verbal messages of impending excommunication to whoever goes farther in that direction. The infant born into a family learns which topics, words, feelings, desires, etc. are, and are not, expressed. The person who begins at a new school, job, organization, community, etc. learns which are the forbidden questions. The learning is based as much upon absences---as upon presences. The manner of reaction of people to hints of asking forbidden questions delimits the boundaries which must not be crossed---even without the boundaries ever being crossed. We learn which boundaries are not to be approached, even without becoming clearly aware of the nature of the boundaries or what is on the other side of them. The learning process is below the conscious level. Forbidden questions often violate peoples' communication rights. The collusions which enforce the taboo do violence to the integrity of the victims of the collusions. The victims can not communicate honestly about the topics which are taboo. They can not gather unbiased data or evaluate it without bias. The victims can not draw reliable conclusions because of the violation of their communication rights. Legitimate consensus can not be reached, because illegitimate consensus is enforced by the collusions. To facilitate the asking of creative new questions--- communication rights should be affirmed, defended, and extended. Those values which call into question people's communication rights should be re-evaluated to see if they deliver the benefits that they are presumed to offer. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
