Non-personal affirmations are not powerful or meaningful. Even non-personally oriented people crave personal affirmations. However, non-personally oriented people do not respect personally oriented people who can most personally affirm others---they are not non- personally competent, they are not respected specialists in non-personal disciplines. Thus non-personally oriented people can not have their needs for personal affirmations met by personally oriented people. In fact, they are likely to feel threatened by personally oriented people who fail to affirm with ultimate concern---their non- personal collusions and so must be excommunicated. Thus people who develop a dependency for affirmations from non-personally oriented others---must turn only to non-personally oriented others in search of affirmation. But non-personally oriented others are very poor in making personal affirmations---giving of themselves only rarely and then rather weakly. Thus non-personally oriented people learn to work for the deferred satisfaction of relatively impersonal affirmations given grudgingly after years of impersonal labor. This further promotes non- personal specialization and the intensification of the vicious cycle. Personally oriented people can break the vicious cycle only with great difficulty. If they wait until they are mature, they are unlikely to gain enough technical competency to merit the respect of the non-personal specialists. If they seek technical competency during their formative years, they are almost certain to get caught in the vicious cycle which promotes perverse academic dependency. Only rarely is a person successful in gaining high levels of technical competency and gaining formal recognition of their competency, while maintaining a highly personal orientation which includes the ability to see through the collusions of the non-personal specialists.
