Too often conscience is not with-knowledge of the contextual limitations of the lessons of our childhood. Often conscience has more to do with our childhood recordings of our fears of rejection/excommunication---than with knowledge of contextual propriety of alternative courses of action. The recordings of our childhood emotions may have more to do with the messages of our conscience---than with reason in its broadest and most holistic sense. Conscience does not always speak wisdom, for it was constructed when we were not wise---by people who were not confronted with our modern situations. The sanctification of conscience does not do anything to help it transcend its limitations; rather the sanctification of conscience compounds the problems and dilemmas occasioned by thoughtless obedience to conscience. The sanctification of conscience empowers manipulators of conscience to become hidden dictators--- who can rule without procedures to guarantee openness, responsiveness, accountability, and the possibility of recall. Thoughtless obedience to conscience does not provide for ways to update the childhood recordings which were interpreted emotionally with childhood perceptions. Thus it is not helpful to engage in simplistic injunctions to "obey your conscience". Humane guidance is far more subtle than that---when it it wise. We need insights which will help us evaluate our conscience; ascertain the value of our conscience. The evaluation needs to be made in an unbiased way in the broadest possible contexts---within the light of a host of varied perceptions representative of the varied poles of the numerous dichotomies which characterize human life. To exclude people at any pole of any dichotomy as irrelevant or untrustworthy---is to bias the consideration and call into question the conclusions. Exclusivity does not promote holistic perceptions. Exclusivity promotes arrogant self-confidence, not wisdom. Genuine conscience will be developed with the knowledge of many varied perceptions, not in the protective environment of an exclusive bias.
