It is intellectually reasonable to deny the reality of that which is essentially imperceptible to you, makes no difference to you. To take seriously that which is essentially imperceptible to you is intellectually irresponsible. Collusions which blind you to some relationships may be part of your character---in which case those relationships will be essentially imperceptible to you, and you may logically deny their reality. Ignorance, repression, elusion, and the like may in a similar way occasion a lack of awareness which is profound, and so justify an act of reality denial. Relationships which cannot be perceived are readily denied. They are likely to be denied if they are threatening to the person who cannot perceive them---for reality denial is one way of coping with threatening relationships. Reality may be perceived as relationships. There are relationships between elements of reality which are other than the person who perceives. There are the interactive relationships between the perceiver and the perceived. There are the inter-relationships between the perceptions experienced by the perceiver. There are the relationships between the realized objective elements which the perceiver uses as organizational elements---to facilitate coping with the relationships between the perceiver and other elements. Thus the essence of reality may be seen as relational, rather than as elemental. Via collusions, elusions, delusions, ignorance, repression, and the like we may be unaware of various relationships---and so deny the reality of those aspects of reality. When we deny some relationship we do not realize it, we do not make it real to ourselves---and it is not real to us. These relationships are not a part of our reality---even though they may be part of another person's reality. The lack of congruence in reality denial tends to occasion difficulties in communication. People living in different realities cannot experience full mutual awareness and mutual understanding. Thus it is important to find ways to share reality affirmations in contexts which do not promote reality denials. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
