Much is said about us by what we find to require an "explanation". Rarely do we ask for an explanation of the "normal", the "usual", the "common"---and we look quizzically upon people who ask for explanations when none are needed. We seek an explanation for their wanting unnecessary explanations. Our differences point to the differences in our world views, our basic assumptions in terms of which we perceive everything. It is thus useful to take note of what we differ in as regards what we regard as unusual. Explanations tend to be an effort to find a similarity between that which is unusual and that which is usual. We seek security and understanding in that which is familiar, usual. Our needs are both emotional and intellectual. We turn to the familiar for emotional security as well as for intellectual understanding. Sometimes the search for emotional security in the emotionally familiar may stand in the way of finding intellectual understanding in similarities between the structure of a new situation and the structure of a familiar situation. Thus as we encounter unusual situations our behavior may be occasioned by a tension between our need for emotional security and intellectual understanding. How we resolve that tension occasions our own particular emotional and intellectual development. Often we assume that all tensions should be resolved. Such an assumption leads to the usual specialization of people into dichotomous types according to the pattern of Two Cultures; objective versus subjective. Intellectuals tend towards objectivity. People who seek emotional security and meaning tend towards being subjective. It is unusual for people to maintain the tension between emotional developmental needs and intellectual developmental needs. Maintaining tension is unusual. Resolving tension is normal. Why would anybody want to maintain a tension? How can we be relaxed, happy, fulfilled, successful if we are constantly under tension? We regard anybody who wants to maintain the essential tension between objectivity and subjectivity as a bit strange, unusual. They certainly are! (c) 2005 by Paul A.
