If 'two plus two equals four' is regarded as an exclusive truth, then the contrasting truth that 'two plus two equals ten' is not likely to be affirmed. If that a piece of metal is black is regarded as an exclusive truth, then the contrasting truths that it may appear orange at a very high temperature, or appear some other color when intensely illuminated with white light against a soot background---are not likely to be affirmed. If that light with certain spectrum wavelengths is yellow is regarded as an exclusive truth, then the truth that yellow lights from within that range can together appear deep purple---is not likely to be affirmed. Exclusive truths are presumed to transcend the contexts of their validity and so occasion failures to affirm complimentary and/or contrasting truths. People who are exclusively objective and/or analytic are likely to view truths as exclusive truths. They are prone to characterize human relationships with what they regard as exclusive truths. If you are not a thoughtless patriot, you are of necessity a communist. If you are not a moralistic Christian you are of necessity an evil person. If you are not sexually inhibited, you must be an irresponsible person. If you are not a legalist, you must not respect law and order. The affirmation of limited truths, as if they were ultimately and exclusively true, thus occasion confusion, misunderstanding, and alienation. Those who make Truth their ultimate concern are prone to become focused upon exclusive truths and so become idolaters who promote the condition of alienation called sin. Truth is contextual. The value of an affirmation depends heavily upon the context of the affirmation--- because both its meaning and relevance are contextual. The language of the affirmation will convey different meanings in different situations. Thus no affirmation can have ultimate value in all contexts, even though the ability and freedom to make and accept affirmations is valuable in all contexts. The ability and freedom to be in dialogue is always valuable, and this value passes judgement upon all other values. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
