That which is to be understood is essentially of a visual nature, and may not in any significant way be reduced to verbal representations which are independent of visual images. The role of a verbal statement is to help facilitate the visualization of the essential spacial/temporal relationships. Pictures and diagrams are likely to play an essential role in understanding and instruction when this is the case. Such pictures and diagrams are likely to be abstractions of the actual situations and processes---simplified representations of reality which leave our details not dealt within the model. Only the represented aspects of the situation are understood. Those which are ignored are thus not understood. Often, however, analysts presume that they understand the whole situation---by repressing their awareness of all that was ignored in formulating the abstract image. Artists who paint pictures, sculpturers who form solid objects, and physicists/engineers who form schematics---all make use of visual representations to clarify their own perceptions and the perceptions of others. The images which they create are efforts at communication which are not verbal in nature; communication which promotes visual understanding by portraying spatial/temporal relationships, rather than verbal-conceptual relationships. Creativity may involve the formulation of new perceptions and new combinations of spatial/temporal relationships, rather than new combinations of verbal relationships. The physicist's and engineer's work involves interrelating visual, verbal, and mathematical REPRESENTATIONS. Much of the difficulty in instruction in the exact sciences originates in the difficulties of facilitating students' perceptions of the relationships between verbal, visual, and mathematical representations-- -and doing so within an affective context which is emotionally supportive when the going gets rough.
