Subjective risks may be experienced subjectively, but only rarely studied objectively in any helpful way. Helpful behavior is usually in the same mode as the risks to which it pertain. Objective prescriptions regarding subjective risks are not likely to be helpful, especially when the prescriptions are formulated by people who have not personally taken the subjective risks themselves. Subjective counsel regarding objective risks is not likely to be helpful, especially when the counsel is offered by people who have not participated in objective study of the risk situation. Experience is an essential foundation for guidance. Beware the people who seek to provide guidance not founded upon appropriate experiences---especially if the guidance pertains to a modality of coping which is foreign to them as individuals. People who are threatened by risk situations may be threatened by seeing others entering those risk situations. The fear they experience due to such vicarious threats may prompt them to offer guidance to those who might enter the risk situations. The overt or covert intent of that guidance is to inhibit the entry into the risk situations on the part of anybody---lest vicarious threats elicit personal fear. The fearful people's timidity leads to assertive behavior designed to make all people timid in like manner. Such inappropriate guidance is most probable when transgressing into an unfamiliar modality of coping; e.g., when the legalist who is objectively oriented seeks to impose prescriptions to regulate affective behavior pertaining to subjective states of consciousness. Risk analysis should be based upon personal experiences honestly reported by people who have taken the risks. This is not likely to occur in a helpful way so long as risky behavior takes place in a judgmental, threatening, excommunicative cultural setting. Profound risk-analysis can take place only within emotionally fail- safe contexts; for only therein is both intellectual and emotional honesty possible. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
