Such failures cut to the core of a person, because faith is such a personal aspect of one's self. Success usually depends upon how dedicated we are and how hard we work. Without dedication and effort, there is rarely success. Often success depends upon our believing that we will succeed. Such belief is often called faith. It is an unequivocal conviction regarding the events which will follow. It is characterized by an absence of doubt. There is no uncertainty in desire or expectation. Successes of faith thus depend upon unequivocal belief which casts out doubt and uncertainty. There is no fear or failure. When success is regarded as essentially dependent upon such faith, any failure is regarded as a sign of the absence of such faith. The successful are regarded as faith-full, the failures are regarded as signs of being faith-less. The successful have grounds for increased faith, the failures have grounds for increased doubts, uncertainties, and low self-esteem. There are many reports of trans-scientific phenomena; e.g., faith healing, fire-walking, super-human feats of strength, clairvoyance, prognostications, etc. Some of these are associated with religious practices, others are not. In each case the focal persons have unequivocal faith upon which the trans-scientific phenomena depend. In our daily lives our ability to fulfill expectations depends upon our belief in our ability to do so. The doubting Thomas is usually not successful. The person who fears business failure and doubts success--- usually fulfills the expectations of failure. The couple that fears/expects their marriage not to work, usually fulfill that expectation. The man who fears/expects impotency usually fulfills that expectation. When we believe we can not conform to moral expectations we succeed in fulfilling that belief. When we believe we will be sickly, we are. As playwrights we control the plots of our lives' plays---and often cast ourselves in unsatisfying roles. Our failures of faith are often the results of our own covert choices, but often we can not be sure---and there is the rub. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
