Exclusive control by any aspect fragments the whole. No fragment of the whole has the power to regenerate the whole. The whole may be realized only as every aspect of the person is granted its due opportunity for expression. Different cultures may perceive fragmented persons in different ways, according to their perception of fragmentation. The fragments may be called by various names in different cultures. What one culture perceives as one fragment may in another culture be perceived as aspects of two different fragments. In western culture terms such as "mind", "body", "spirit", and "soul" tend to be used, with possible overlap between "spirit" and "soul". In place of "mind" such terms as "reason" or "intellect" may be used. In place of "body" such terms as "passion", "flesh" and "physical" may be used. In association with "spirit" and "soul" terms such as "religious", "heavenly", "holy", "divine", and "Godly" may be used. Each term in perceived as pointing to an aspect of a fragmented person---the whole being made up of the parts, rather than creating and giving meaning to the parts. The fragments are perceived as being primary, the whole as being consequential---disagreements focusing upon which fragment should be dominant in determining the nature of the consequential whole. Fragmented people tend to believe that their dominant aspect should be the dominating aspect for all people, other aspects being arrogant if they fail to submit to the guidance of the dominant aspect of their life and so it should be empowered to pass judgment on other aspects of life. Such exclusive perceptions generate much conflict which often assumes violent forms. The integrity which is ostensibly valued by each dominating aspect is not attainable via exclusive efforts directed by any one dominating aspect. Exclusivity undermines the effort and assures continued fragmentation, regardless of the level of technical sophistication, good intentions, and sincerity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
