This is especially true if our orientation is objective rather than subjective; for them we tend to objectify our conception of our future. Our future is perceived as destined in time through the operation of transcendent causes (perhaps even The Prime Cause), rather than our future being chosen/created within the eternal now of I-Thou dialogues. Thus, an objective approach to living promotes a tendency towards taking predestination literally---in the sense of determinism. When combined with a legalistic approach to life (which is also encouraged by objectivism) a literal predestinarian view may occasion a sense of duty to fulfill, rather than choose, a destiny originating ostensibly outside the self. Thus one may feel it is one's duty to discover objectively what one's destiny is, and fulfill the expectations of one's self that is implicit in that destiny. Thus, the meaning of one's life may appear to depend upon an objective determination of one's destiny. Yet, personal meaning pertains to subjective/reflexive reality, not to objective reality. The incongruity of meaning apparently being dependent upon objective determinations is an incongruity which generates apprehension, at the subconscious if not at the conscious level. Apprehension will persist so long as one is not free to choose one's destiny and meaning within the natural constraints of one's context. The presumption of an objectively determined destiny inhibits one's freedom to choose one's destiny---at least so long as one does not rebel against one's presumed destiny or against the presumption that each person has an objectively real destiny. Human freedom has no real meaning unless day by day one may choose to transcend one's previous conceptions of one's destiny as previously chosen. If any choices are perceived as ultimate, they may become idols and enslave one's self---making it impossible for self to adapt to unanticipated changes in one's environment/context and/or conception thereof. To enslave one's self to a former commitment to fulfill an immature choice/conception of one's destiny, is to engage in idolatry; especially if the destiny is conceived objectively. To escape these traps one may make one's ultimate commitment to love and its expressions---fulfilling one's unanticipated destiny thereby. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
