Within the context of objective I-It relationships people may agree with verbal statements by speaking, writing, or assenting---but such agreement/assent is different than a genuine meaningful affirmation. We can meaningfully affirm only that which we have meaningful internalized. We cannot meaningfully affirm what we have learned only at an intellectual level, or what others coercively expect us to affirm. To appear to affirm that which we have not internalized, is to violate our integrity and so to cease to be a whole being. To become dedicated to appearances we must cease to live as whole beings, and exist instead in the world of I-It relationships and of superficial exclusive intellectual learning. Affirmations are not objective statements about objective realities/relationships. Affirmations are reflexive statements made with the whole being through exemplary behavior. Affirmations are more than verbal statements---although verbal statements may be involved in affirmations. Through decisions and actions, real persons deal with real problems and dilemmas in ways which create role-models which are meaningful affirmations. Through their union, and within the reflexive and objective modes of coping, they affirm unions which transcend the dichotomies which fragment our five-cultures. Only through such affirmations can those dichotomies be transcended. Those who make such affirmations are attractive scientists who use techniques humanely, rather than to intensify the technocratic society. Attractive scientists who, through their integrity make affirmations, thereby contribute to a socialization process through which we may transcend the dehumanizing contexts of the technocratic society. They are living exemplars who are more attractive than are technocrats. They are more accepting of students as real persons with souls rather than as blank slates. It is often not helpful to deal with or speak isolated truths. Not all truths are helpful. Not all truths can be affirmed. A dedication to truth can be idolatrous. Truth without love is futile. Faith, hope, and love give meaning to truths which without them can be deadly serious---undermining humane joys and fulfillment. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
