Such involvement occurs at both the spectator and participant level. Humanists, on the other hand, rarely become involved in scientific cultural activities either as spectators or as participants. The result is that it appears that scientists do a batter job of being aware of the domain of humanists than vice versa. That appearance is not without its truth. Yet that is not the whole truth. When scientists become involved in non-scientific cultural activities they tend to retain their technical orientation---focusing upon highly structured art forms and humanistic endeavors. Their non-scientific interests tend to be a manifestation of their technical orientation --- but with subject matter different than that of their profession. They tend toward highly structured classical music such as that of Bach and Beethoven. Thus their participation in humanistic endeavors does not necessarily signify a transcendence of their technical orientation. Humanists find it exceedingly difficult to become involved in scientific activities --- because of the high premium placed by scientists upon their specialized languages which require extended periods of training and acculturation to the attitudes and value system of the scientific sub-culture. Humanists as adolescents and adults (often at a subconscious level) resist the acculturation process and so find the training exercises difficult and emotionally wearing. Their dropping out leaves the scientific professions more pure --- free of the distracting effects of profound humanistic questioning. This leaves the scientists free to be specialists un-distracted by deeply personal experiences which do not yield to objective analysis. The scientists' involvement in humanistic culture is often devoid of really deep personal dialogue and intimacy which is an essential aspect of a holistic life full of meaning. Thus the depth of their cross-cultural understanding is often less than appearances would suggest. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
