It lacks adoption by due legislative process. The costs and benefits of enforcing morality have NOT been publicly debated and followed by a formal vote of representatives elected by fair votes of the people affected. Thus moral codes usually represent the views of a powerful few, rather than the consensus of the many. The few are powerful in the sense that they are permitted to cause others to at least pretend to abide by their moral code, even though they may not respect the moral code. Due to the nature of morality, appearances are what count. One must appear to respect the moral code to cope with those who value morality and seek to enforce their personal code of morality. One must thus choose between actually internalizing the dominant moral code (perhaps in violation of one's integrity) or pretending to internalize the dominant moral code (again in violation of one's integrity). Moralists would contend that internalizing their moral code will not violate a person's integrity---rather enhance it; because morality is given by God. Moralists view morality is a reality which exists independent of the values which people give themselves to. They believe that there are objective moral laws, just as absolute as the objective physical laws of the objective scientists. People obey the moral laws --- else they will be punished just as are people who fail to respect physical laws. Often moralists volunteer to help punish those who violate their moral laws. It is strange that there are few volunteers to help punish those who fail to respect physical laws. It is never made clear why humans must help God punish those who violate moral laws, but need not help God punish those who violate physical laws. Nevertheless, there are in each generation some who appoint themselves to be God's helpers in the task of enforcing morality. By a strange twist of logic they view their failures as grounds for intensified efforts just like those which generated their failures. While we were still fumbling because of our estrangement from each other due to our efforts to enforce our moral codes --- we were visited by a suffering servant who promoted reconciliation and even-handedness through unconditional acceptance of individuals as unique beings who cannot live fully according to any law or code.
