The perceptions may flow from sensory relationships which occurred at some time past and are interpreted through memory, generalizations, and/or abstractions. New perceptions may thus flow from old sensory relationships via a process of generating new generalizations and abstractions and/or by becoming aware of new interrelationships between internalized sensory relationships, generalizations, abstractions, and relationships. People often make use of others' reported sensory relationships as if they themselves had experienced them. The ability to do this greatly broadens people's scope of awareness and understanding. Such reports are often transmitted verbally --- either orally or in writing. Much less consciously they are transmitted in non-verbal ways: behavior, body language, facial expressions, eye contact, personal avoidances, paintings, music, dance, architecture, personal associations, affection, sexual behavior, values affirmed, values denied, persons affirmed persons denied, etc. Our focus of attention may become so exclusively memory, generalizations, abstractions, and abstract reports --- that sensory relationships between us and the environment decay. We may get all wrapped up in concerns which block awareness of the sensuous aspect of our being. Subtle sounds, smells, tastes, sights, and tactile sensations may be totally ignored in favor of verbal processes; or for a few in favor of abstract and/or mathematical processes. Through non-verbal language the exclusive value of verbal-language may be affirmed. That affirmation is powerful because it is made non-verbally and is out of the reach of the verbal language which is affirmed. This affirmation is the foundation for much alienation between self and others. The destructive nature of the affirmation is found in its implicit denial of the value of non-verbal language and the denial of the value of those foci of attention which verbal language is impotent to cope. It is the denial which is destructive. That denial makes many students lose contact with reality. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
