The affirmation of one value of necessity often is an act which assigns a lower value to other possibilities. Valuing has to do with the allocation of scarce resources. To say that some possibility is worthy of being valued, as if that was an isolated and independent judgment, is to be deceptive. Perhaps self is deceived. Perhaps self knows the deception and would deceive others. Perhaps self is a participant in a collusion within which members pretend to value everything equally, and so allocate scarce resources as if they were not scarce---rapidly depleting their resource supply while denying its limited nature. Such is the case with many technocrats and space-ship-earth's supply of energy and high quality mineral concentrations. The foolishness of absolute valuing originates in intellectual discussions which tend towards absolutes and ideal forms. When teachers divorce their instruction form real living, they tend towards analysis appropriate to a world of ideal forms rather than to a world populated by people in essentially ambiguous situations. The teachers forget how to cope with ambiguity, if they ever knew how, and tend towards analyses in terms of absolutes and ideal forms. This pattern of behavior is encouraged by people of like orientation at professional meetings and at meetings which determine academic retention, promotion, and tenure. The antidote to absolute valuing is intimate participation in the secular political world where coping with limited resources is a daily experience. Here in formal and informal ways participants come to terms with setting priorities for the use of their scarce resources-- -most often represented imperfectly by limited money; but more and more frequently by limited energy, land, soil, and minerals which cannot be manufactured by men and women, as can money. In such real situations participants find they must decide what is most important, and so they must ask that question of the owners of the limited resources in one way or another. This is often difficult because the owners have not been educated to ask questions of relative value, and do not have parliamentary procedures for dealing with prioritizing of a long list of desiderata which make demands upon limited resources. Changes must be made. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in www.essayz.com Search for Integrity and Honesty (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
