Each strand of spaghetti winds its way around and between a fair fraction of the other strands of spaghetti. Each strand thus relates to a fair fraction of all other strands in the bowl. If you consider the strands of spaghetti which touch those which touch any one strand--- you will find most strands within the bowl included. How is one to analyze a bowl of spaghetti so as to adequately describe all the multitude of interconnections between strands and between strands which in common connect to a common strand? A traditional academic outline is not appropriate to the task. The structure of the interrelationships is far too complex for such an outline to do it justice. A more appropriate expository structure is required. To do justice to the bowl of spaghetti it would be necessary to designate each strand, and one by one describe how it relates to all other strands in the bowl; by direct single or multiple contact, or by indirect contact via other strands in the bowl. The bowl of spaghetti is in some ways like the social structure of a well integrated complex community, in which each individual moves freely through major portions of the total community, and interacts with a fair fraction of the other members of the community. In such a community, if you consider the individuals who touch individuals who touch any given individual---you will find most individuals within the community included. A description of such a community must, as in the case of the bowl of spaghetti, be structured in terms of the ways in which each participant fits into the total structure. The interacting elements which are considered in these essays are as the strands of spaghetti and the members of a closely integrated community. They cannot be adequately described in a structure dominated by a traditional academic outline. Thus they need to be approached one by one, and an attempt made to relate each to the numerous other elements, each of which is unavoidably ambiguously defined. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
