The nature of reality is twofold, in accordance with the twofold attitude of participants. The nature of reality is not independent of the attitude of the participant. Participants who approach the realization of reality with different attitudes naturally realize different realities. This causes problems only to the participants who are not aware that the nature of reality depends in part upon the attitude with which they approach it. Those participants who approach reality with the attitude that it is essentially objective, out- there, other to them as non-participant observer/analyzer: They will find it impossible to cope meaningfully with participants who are aware that their manner of approach to reality contributes to its realization, and so to the nature of reality as they perceive it. The exclusively objective people via their exclusive hypothesis exclude a wide range of meaningful perceptions of reality, so excluding the perceptions which give meaning to participation in reality; i.e., life. The central question is not, "What is the nature of reality?" Rather the central question is, "How can we approach each other as participants so as to realize a meaningful mutual awareness and mutual understanding of our varied attitudes/approaches to reality and so our varied perceptions of its nature?" This avoids the problems created by assuming that there is but one nature of reality which an ultimate authority can certify correct. It avoids the problems encountered in attempting to generate consensus as to that ultimate authority. It avoids the alienation occasioned by the ultimate disagreements which originate in the varied attitudes/approaches to reality by unique participants. Participants are an integral part of reality and the integrity of reality is violated by an exclusively objective approach to reality, as well as by an exclusively subjective approach. Thus the integrity of the participants is also thereby violated: by setting themselves 'over against' reality they set the stage for a drama in which they set themselves 'over against' each other. They naturally conclude that participants are originally evil, and that violence is innate. They thereby fulfill the attitude/approach with which they participate. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
