Motivation is a subjective reality. Behavior is an objective reality. One cannot really study motivation objectively. Thus objective people are indifferent to motivation, or re-define it in objective terms so that the subjective reality is overlaid with a substitute which conceals the true reality. Behavior has meaning which flows from the motivation of the behavior. Objective people cannot determine the meaning of behavior. They cannot give meaning to anyone's behavior, including their own. They cannot discover the meaning of anyone's behavior, including their own. The meaning flows from the motivation which is a non-reality to the compulsively objective person. Thus the meaning must remain a hidden mystery. Educators seek to involve students in meaningful activities to promote healthy their personal development. For reasons of efficiency they tend toward objective goals and certification, and thus toward a focus upon behavior, rather than upon motivation. What students write and say is regarded as more important than what they feel and think. They are rewarded for fulfilling teachers' objective expectations, but not for revealing their true selves to educators as friends. Teachers define their role as being dominant---with students in a submissive role. Revelations of true motivations are inhibited in such relationships. The focus turns toward playing games through objective behaviors. Legalistic procedures cannot cope with motivation because they drive motivation underground to operate in secret. People who are manipulated via legalistic procedures are motivated to lead dual lives. Their objective behavior is calculated to win the legalistic game. Their subjective life is hidden in an effort to maintain personal integrity---despite the violence of coercive legalistic constraints. When students are dealt with legalistically---education becomes impossible, because students see it is not safe to be led out, educed. To be led out is to become vulnerable. Real education involves the risk of vulnerability. Legalism teaches that risk should not be taken. Thus legalism undermines education. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
