Scribes may play games skillfully with words, yet know not what they do in reality. Scribes stand by the authority of others, but know not where they stand personally. They know not how to profess even if they bear the title professor. Scribes are verbal technocrats who seek to solve human problems via the clever manipulation of words and disembodied ideas. It is difficult to recognize a scribe and to.pass fair judgment upon that which scribes do and do not do; for in the attempt one is likely to become as the scribes and so become unaware of the difference between scribes and others who are real persons. In the process of participation in the use of techniques to judge who is and who isn't a scribe, one is likely to become the victim of the presumption of knowledge of good and evil with all that is implied therein. The existence of the scribe is relatively devoid of the mutual awareness of emotions of self and others. Emotions do not yield readily to ensymbolment and much less to techniques of manipulation through symbolic logic; e.g., the precise manipulation of propositions stated in words. Via collusion that which can not be manipulated is defined not to be, and so is not part of the state of consciousness of scribes. The primary experiences of scribes come to be the ensymbolments of former scribes rather than the personal sensory experiences of particular inner and outer realities and processes. In the scribes' efforts to deal with finitude he seeks to transcend the particular via the ensymbolments of the universals made real in the particular. Through the success of rising above the particular the scribe loses contact with the reality of the universals made real in particulars which participate in the essential finitude of humanity. Thus the manipulations of scribes do not often point to the relevant fundamentals which will be helpful to real people with real problems. The way out of the trap of the scribes is to develop a mutual awareness of primary sensory experiences and states of consciousness through authentic meeting. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
