Regarding many of the categories, we are familiar with first premises, elementary propositions, corollaries, and possible deductions. For example: "If you really loved me you would. " Or, on the other hand, "If you trust somebody they will take advantage of you. " We have learned the words and from the rationalists we have learned how to manipulate the words. Yet few seem to know what realities the words point to. The realities to which the words point have not been experienced. Since our logic is imperfect the result is that the more removed from the primary experience we get, the more off-the-track our logic and behavior becomes. It is not safe to extrapolate by logic far beyond the primary experiences into territory on which the primary experiences shed little light. Modern man needs to begin a search for reality. The categories which are so skillfully manipulated by the rationalists may give hints to the existence of certain realities which have been ignored by many for years. Some persons have come to conclude by logic that some of those realities no longer exist, if they ever did. Yet that is a misuse of logic or perhaps a testimony that "logic" is a category which points to an unknown reality. Some scientists are skillful in manipulating theory, but inept in the laboratory. In recent years there has been a drift toward the theorists becoming teachers and the laboratory scientists going into industry. The result is that each successive generation of students is more theoretically oriented with new textbooks being written by even more theoretical teachers. The same process has taken place with respect to our understanding of the human condition. The educators concerned with teaching about the human condition in liberal arts colleges are by and large rationalists who manipulate categories but are all too often far removed from a personal awareness of the realities to which those categories point. An important aspect of a liberal arts education should be an honest search for the realities to which the categories such as love, sacrifice, forgiveness, salvation, acceptance, suffering, eternity, death, rebirth, etc., point.
