One reason it is less common is that many scientists seem to feel that their relationships with the political sphere of life should be handled at the upper levels of government, perhaps primarily through a science advisor to the president, To try to explain to a precinct caucus participants reasons for them supporting additional funds for pure research might seem an exercise in futurity to some scientists. Yet both the scientist and the typical citizens might learn from the experience. In efforts of practicing scientists to explain science to typical citizens the scientists might gain insights into the real problems of real persons. In the glory of the accomplishments (?) of science and technology associated with recent wars, scientists have sometimes acquired a sense of automatic right to public funds in support of doing their thing. The value of pure research is in the eyes of some beyond question, and it is difficult to differentiate between diversionary research and helpful research. Participation of scientists in the political process on an equal footing with other citizens might facilitate this differentiation. Through political participation scientists would encounter the contra st between their states of consciousness and those that typify most citizens, Through such encounters scientists might gain a more realistic under-standing of the needs for science education within the society. They would perceive the nature of the needs in the lights of the real problems which citizens have in participating in decisions and actions relating to the uses of science and technology. The dominant focus might then shift to meeting real needs rat7her than to trying to train people in the subtleties of theoretical scientific structures, If scientists are willing to be patient, they and society can profit greatly through more frequent participation of scientists in our society's political processes.
