Every beginning is made possible through an ending. Through process what was, becomes what is; and what is, will pass and become what will be. Without death there can not be continuing birth. For self conscious creatures this leads to the problem of consciously dealing with finitude, or else via collusions seeking to avoid any mutual awareness of finitude. For example, some would seek full control over death, and seek to preserve the dead as living-dead in complex ice boxes; in the wish that techniques may be devised to prolong metabolic processes at a future time. Such persons are not free to choose death, and can find no meaning in death. They learnedly discuss technical definitions of death, but know it not in their own lives. Many of the central dilemmas of modern societies are the natural consequences of the use of techniques of death control in the absence of the use of techniques of birth control. Technocrats who know not the meaning of death can not be helpful in clarifying the meaning of birth and re-birth, and so find it difficult to be helpful in motivating the use of techniques of birth control. Birth control must be intimately associated with sexual states of consciousness and intimate relations. Technocrats do not have techniques for the full control of birth with out endangering reciprocal/reflexive perceptions. Through compulsive analysis and full control people cease to live as they continue to metabolize. Every birth is a rebirth and every rebirth is a birth. In each there is death. Compulsive getting, keeping, and preserving leads to a crisis in affluence and waste. Some dream the impossible dream of life without death, meaning without sacrifice, possessions without giving, beginnings without endings. On a finite planet such a self-image is not in accord with the natural consequences of the nature of reality to which real persons are free to point. Compulsive efforts to avoid all death stand in the way of rebirth and meaningful living. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
