It is a matter of doctrine that there is deferred relevance in what traditionally concerns academicians. Yet the dominant focus of higher education has rarely been of such a character as to help real students through their developmental stages in such a way as to help develop behavior patterns which have true carry-over value. The adult needs freedom to see, and freedom to choose from among possible courses of action. There is not enough time and energy to gather all the possibly relevant information and/or to carry analysis through in all possible directions. Yet, real persons live by daily participating in decisions and action which have natural but real consequences. Too infrequently has higher education been structured so as to give students honest practice in the integration of intellectual and affective insights into the process of participating in the practical decisions and actions which are truly helpful political action. It would be wise for academicians to use some foresight in an effort to anticipate the types of decisions and action which the future will bring to today's students. If today's students are to have the freedom to see and the freedom to choose tomorrow wisely- --they must start practicing today under the creative guidance of attractive scientists who are more dedicated to helpful behavior, than to the isolated practice of their profession for their mutual "advancement". By focusing more of education upon practical decisions and action, it may be possible to escape from the enslavement of the myth that the search for truth transcends value judgements. Our decisions regarding how to spend our finite time constitute our most profound value judgements. Professors teach most powerfully by how they decide to spend their limited time and the limited time of their students. Actions reveal the real decisions a person makes. The relevant fundamentals of science are more likely to be learned with carry-over value if they are encountered as essential elements in making and acting on personal decisions which are representative of those which will determine whether or not the student will live as a slave or as a free-man or free-woman. That is what a liberal education should be all about. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
