There are more values which we might each affirm than we have time and energy to affirm. We each experience a sense of frustration upon declining to affirm (in practical terms) values which we recognize as appropriate for our affirmation. Different individuals develop different ways of responding to such a sense of frustration. We may enter into a collusion with others to the effect that most of the values which one does not have time and energy to affirm, are in reality counterfeits and therefore we should not waste our time and energy affirming them. "We know the limited set of values which merit affirmation. Persons who affirm other values are lost and not worthy of respect." We may go farther and enter into another collusion to the effect that we have not entered into the previous collusion. An aspect of this second-order collusion is the loss of awareness of the values which others affirm, and of the realities of life to which they are responsive. Frustration is thus minimized by the loss of the awareness of the situation which caused the frustration. It is defined out of existence. Mutual awareness is reduced by collusion. The narrowly dedicated research scientist who devotes almost all his consciousness and energy to diversionary research is but one example of the above. He may be aware of other values, but regard them as counterfeit. Or, he may be so dedicated to research as to have lost the ability to enter into authentic meeting with real people without fear of estrangement. By joining in one or more collusions with like scientists, the frustration of finitude may be temporarily forgotten. Scientists who solve the problem of dealing with finitude in the above ways lose their personal integrity and cease to live as real persons. One may become far more creative by openly acknowledging one's finitude and the worth of values which others affirm with their finite time and energy. With interdependence thus acknowledged, team work is possible; drawing together real persons living in differing states of consciousness. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
