When they are unable to make sense of their results and find little hope and meaning in them; they are inclined to improve the statistics and use more sophisticated techniques of statistical analysis in an effort to extract insight from the data. Some even seem inclined to avoid generating hypotheses until they have more adequate data in hand. They do not wish to prejudice the experiment by an experimental design which includes any initial insight into the human condition. It is expected that insight will be generated by the data. Such procedures spring from perverted self-images of being scientific and from a failure to recognize the dynamic interplay between experimental design, unexamined assumptions, preconceptions, participation, data, hypothesis, motivation, insight, etc. Such procedures value measurement and statistical analysis to the exclusion of creative insight which can not be brought under the full control of any technique of investigation. The procedures often fail to acknowledge the difference between real persons and others who have ceased to live-- -and so exist only in the stream of cause and effect without any effective intentionality. When the most essential variable in an experiment is not recognized--- it is impossible to draw helpful conclusions from the outcome of the experiment recorded on data sheets. Persons who seek to make use of scientific techniques in regards to relationships between humans would do well to start with meditations on the limitations of science--- and upon the essential uncertainties of the human condition. Those who perceive relationships as secondary to elements will "discover" that elements are primary--- and fail to discover real persons within authentic meetings. Those who seek to know others through authentic meetings may come to know relation-ships as primary and perceive elements as tools which are helpful in the analysis of processes. No computer program can be written which will accept data about objective human behavior and upon analysis of the data, print out an insight (into what it means to be human) which was not present in the writer of the computer program. Data without insight is deadly. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
