When the outcomes of our behaviors bring us pain, disease, conflict, tragedies, etc. --- we naturally may seek to avoid the behaviors, outcomes, pain, diseases, conflicts, tragedies, etc. Often in these efforts we are not successful. Why? In part because in human relationships it is never possible to duplicate exactly a previous situation. Consider the following factors which apply to efforts to duplicate and/or avoid a course of events: 1. Once something has happened the first time --- in the future it cannot happen again for the first time; the history of the first time "occurrence" makes any future "occurrence" different in that it will be the "second", "third", etc. "occurrence." Memories of the past change the future. 2. We cannot control exactly the details of any course of human relationships. Small differences in an early part of a human relationship can make great differences in a latter part. This is amply illustrated in objective processes described with "chaos theory" --- so called because the details of such processes cannot be predicted long into the future. 3. The more people there are who have become involved in the course of some human relationships --- the more complex the overall relationships become. The longer the duration of a pattern of human relationships is --- the more people there are who are participants in the pattern --- and the less predictable is the future course of events. The larger is the group of people who initiate a pattern of human relationships --- the more complex and the less predictable is the outcome. 4. The more people who have been involved in a "first" occurrence of a pattern of personal relationships --- the more difficult it will be to "duplicate" the circumstances on the occasion of trying to repeat the pattern at a future time. 5. The greater are the efforts of some people to control the details of a pattern of relationships --- the more resentment there is likely to be on the part of other people who do not appreciate being controlled. People who may have appreciated the first occasion may well resent any effort by anybody to control things so as to try to duplicate the first occasion. We need to remember that the above considerations apply both to efforts to duplicate a course of events --- and to efforts to avoid a previously tragic course of events. Perfect control over outcomes is ultimately impossible in the long term. The above considerations taken together imply that it is futile to attempt to use any formula or set of rules and regulations to: 1. Assure success in any human effort. or 2. Assure the avoidance of tragedy in any effort. It is likely to be fruitful to agree on a coherent set of basic principles, ideals, values and attitudes --- which will help participants in any effort to minimize the alienation, estrangement, resentment, insecurity, distrust, etc. which is likely to follow from any failure to get things to work out "rightly" for the point of view of persons affected. In the absence of such agreements "failures" are likely to lead to personal and communal disintegration. People who are preoccupied with issues of control in efforts to achieve perfection in outcomes --- are UNLIKELY to agree on the importance of any coherent set of basic principles, ideals, values and attitudes --- which will help participants in any effort to minimize the alienation, estrangement, resentment, insecurity, distrust, etc. --- which is likely to follow from any failure to get things to work out "rightly" from the point of view of all persons affected.
