To transcend and mitigate violent conflicts,
battles, terrorism and wars we need to understand their
logic, reason, purpose, goals, hopes and aspirations ---
as embodied in those people who willfully engage in such
activities. Usually such people are dichotomous
thinkers. They reduce questions, issues and battles to
"yes" or "no"; "right" or "wrong", "good" or "evil",
"friend" or "foe", "in" or "out", "loyal" or "traitor".
If combatants do not hate each other personally
before a violent conflict, they and their friends are
likely to hate each other personally if they survive.
The heat of battle undermines possibilities for
creative conflict resolution among the combatants. "We"
are "right" and "they" are "wrong".
"We" must eliminate "them" if "they" refuse to admit
that they are "wrong", have "wronged us" and
refuse make compensation for how they have "wronged us".
They will be an affront to "us" so long as they
refuse to admit that they are "wrong" and have done "evil"
things which are "intolerable".
If "we" and "thy" cannot get past such dichotomous
thinking then "we" and "they" and their "children" for
endless generations will be locked in the prisons of our
unending un-resolved violent conflicts. Perhaps it is
time to honor, empower, and follow peacemakers who know
how to lead us into WIN-WIN conflict resolutions where all
participants can cheerfully say YES to constructive
cooperation.
Un-resolved conflicts drain us of energy, resources
and opportunities --- within ourselves, our families, our
tribes, our cities, states, nations and coalitions.
Trying to win at other people's expense is an in-efficient
way to try to get ahead. Cooperation is a far
more efficient way to get ahead.
