We trust some people instinctively --- without basing our trust upon any formal analysis. Similarly we distrust other people. What are the differences between those whom we instinctively trust --- and those whom we instinctively distrust? We rarely trust people primarily because of their overtly religious beliefs, doctrines, rituals, life styles and communities. We often distrust people primarily because of their exclusive religious beliefs, doctrines, rituals and life styles. The people whom we instinctively trust are people who (in often mysterious ways) embody and enjoy personal and communal integrity. Their coherence transcends the preoccupations of all exclusive people --- in ways which transcend formal analysis. While a complete formal analysis may not be fruitful, the following may point in helpful ways to the differences between the people whom we instinctively trust --- the people whom we instinctively distrust: TRUST DISTRUST Balanced Extremist Gentle Coercive Considerate Fanatical Responsive Secretive Tolerant Demanding Forgiving Judgmental Inclusive Exclusive Integrative Specialist Liberating Disciplinarian Cheerful Stern Affectionate Formal Spontaneous Calculative Personable Impersonal Flexible Rigid Secure Defensive Most of us can probably more reliably discern who is trustworthy and who is not trustworthy in terms of all that is pointed to above --- than we can discern which overtly religious beliefs, doctrines, rituals, life styles and communities are trustworthy. It is probably prudent to judge the latter in terms of how they are regarded by the former. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
