Sin and evil have to do with alienation --- from
self, from others, and from God.
We cannot eliminate all alienation. Alienation is a
part of the human condition because finitude is part of
the human condition. We cannot be in intimate
communication with all people of the world. We have to
choose which few people to be intimately involved with,
which to be casual friends with, which to be involved with
in formal conventional relationships, and which to greet
casually --- if ever.
Many people we will be totally ignorant of --- never
meeting them and never hearing of them in any way except
as part of abstract statistics having to do with counts of
how many people there are in various parts of the world.
We choose to be friendly and intimate with certain
kinds of people --- and to not take the time to get to
know others at all well. In our ignorance we are prone
to distrust many people with whom we are not familiar.
Evil and sin have to do with how and why we are alienated
from the many people whom we do not know, do not trust, do
not understand and/or do not respect.
The qualities of our lives depend upon what kinds of
alienation we engender, tolerate, or seek to transcend ---
and the kinds of people we excommunicate, tolerate or seek
to be friends with. The qualities of our lives depend
upon the "logic", "reasons", and "backgrounds" of our
patterns of alienation; and similarly of the patterns of
alienation of those who are our neighbors.
Some people take pride in how and why they are
selective in choosing whom to be alienated from within
their exclusive clubs, organizations, churches, etc. They
take comfort in being together with others who are
similarly alienated for similar reasons from similar
"undesirables." All of their closest friends within their
respectable exclusive clubs, organizations, churches and
neighborhoods "cannot" be wrong! That is "unthinkable",
and they do not think of the possibility --- to avoid
considering the evidence which might help them to discern
whether or not the "unthinkable" might be true. Such a
discernment would alienate them from their closest
friends! That is the tacit rule of their collusive games
of mutual self deception.
