The processes of our lives entail in essential ways significant changes. The changes which are essential to healthy living entail changes both outside of us, and inside of us. We cannot grow without changing --- and yet often we are futilely trying to prevent change --- because we falsely believe that we can achieve security by preventing changes which impinge on things which are near and dear to us. Often we act as if our security and fulfillment depend upon us promoting changes in things and people around us --- while preventing changes in ourselves. We presume to be eternal --- while all around us is to be changed to serve our emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual needs. Since we were born --- it is clear that we have not existed eternally. We have virtually no memories of how things were before we were born. Since history makes clear that eventually all people die ---it is clear that we cannot expect to exist eternally into the future. Birth and death are changes --- and yet we spend much of our time in ways which embody the false notion that we are not changing, and that our fulfillment will be achieved without any essential changes occurring within us, or within those parts of our lives which are most dear to us. Our collusive games of mutual self-deception often entail acting as if: 1. It is other people's duty to change. 2. It is our duty to cling to ancient "truths". 3. All important "truths" were discovered long ago. 4. Modern revelations cannot change us meaningfully. 5. God will protect us from changes which we fear. 6. God commands that we maintain ancient beliefs. 7. People who promote belief changes are evil. 8. Conflicts will be resolved when others change. 9. Conformity to our views are essential to peace. Playing collusive games which are founded upon a belief system such as suggested above --- leads inevitably to endless conflict, violence and war. The things that do not change are the disintegrative consequences of not changing in ways which are essential to resolving conflicts and making peace. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
