Arrogant and self-righteous people often think highly of themselves in ways which lead to personal and communal disintegration. We need to learn how to recognize the roots of such disintegrative self-esteem; and to articulate ways to ground self-esteem in order to promote personal and communal integrity for all concerned. Low self-esteem is often compensated for by artificial and non-authentic techniques for generating high-self esteem. People often select what they call "fundamentals" so that those selected fundamentals, and conformity to them, will serve as the basis for regarding themselves as "better" people than other integrative people who do not conform to what the selected "fundamentals" demand. Idealistic ideals do not always lead to personal and communal integrity---especially if they have been selected or formulated in order to make some people feel free to think of themselves as being "better" than other people who do not claim to conform to the ideals. Often idealism and perfectionism lead to personal and communal disintegration. Much depends upon the motivations, attitudes and life-styles of the people who embody the ideals and values which should be in question. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
