People who have a very low self-esteem are usually not well respected---because they do not function well as members of their communities. Often we need help from others in maintaining our self-esteem, in thinking well of ourselves, and in feeling good about ourselves. Thus we seek the approval of others. We seek out friends who affirm us. We usually tend to avoid and/or reject people who are usually critical of us. All of the above behaviors are reflexive behaviors--- they reflect back upon us, as we (and others) reflect upon how well we (and they) have fulfilled our (and their) ideals and values. It is logically impossible for us to be thoroughly objective about: 1. Ourselves, our bodies, our behaviors; 2. How others regard us; 3. How we regard ourselves and others like us; 4. Criteria which affect our self-judgements; 4. Our ideals, values, motivations and goals; 5. Criteria which affect others' judgments of us; 6. Other's ideals, values, motivation, and goals; 7. The paradigm which guides our own lives; 8. The paradigms which guide other's judgements; 9. Our mistakes, failures and dishonesties; 10. Our friends' mistakes, failures and dishonesties. If we are thoroughly dedicated to being thoroughly objective at all times; we are likely to try to be thoroughly objective about ourselves---even if it is illogical and dishonest to do so. We may deceive ourselves into thinking/feeling that if we try hard enough, we will be able to be objective about ourselves. Because we want others to respect our efforts, we may band together in collusive games of mutual self deception in which all the players help each other to think/feel that they are being objective about themselves and each other. The larger the number of players, the more secure we feel that "so many people could not all be wrong" --- especially if we are respected highly by non-scientists who admire the fruits of our scientific paradigm.
