     How  are we to protect ourselves against  people  who
might reasonably be described by words in the title above?

     Can  we  protect  ourselves against  such  people  by
becoming  like  them;   by  adopting  their   assumptions,
attitudes,  ideals, values, and manipulative ways?   Would
such  a manner of self-protection promote our own personal
and communal integrity---or undermine them?  Not likely!

     To  protect ourselves against manipulative people  we
need  to  transcend their thinking and ways  of  behaving.
That  transcendence is not easy.   If we do not try to  do
