Extremists cannot tolerate being seen as associated with the opposing extremists---so therefore by their logic they themselves must move farther to the opposite extreme so that their own associates will have to look away from the opposing enemy extremists to see them as purists who are unadulterated by appearing to be far away from the enemy. Compulsive objectivists vie with each other to be more objective than each other---so that they will not be seen as associated with the emotionally unbalanced extremists who do not want to be seen as emotionally dead. The specter of the absurdity of the emotionally dead compulsive objectivists motivates other people to go to the other extreme---of being overly emotional, demonstrative and unconventional. Extremists (of all kinds) because of their dichotomous assumptions and and attitudes work hard to avoid being seen against the backdrop of each other's extremism---and so they work hard to avoid the healthy realities of dynamic balance and integrity. We need to recognize the virtues of balance which is seen as balance, and to avoid the absurdities of all kinds of extremists who are the victims of exclusivity and alienation from all that would contribute to their enjoyment of dynamically balanced living. Healthy purity and perfection cannot be helpfully defined in terms of exclusivity and dichotomous thought patterns. Personal and communal integrity have to do with being inter-connected in integrative patterns of open and honest communications within intimate relationships with many different kinds of people. They do not have to do with dis-association, separation, exclusivity and alienation. See the next essay for related considerations. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
