Affirmations of values are not objective realities; they are reflexive realities. Technocrats often seek to pretend that their favorite technologies are valuable in objective ways; i.e., that their value is an objective reality which can be proven in a scientific way. Compulsively objective people are in a double bind: They seek to affirm the ultimate value of objectivity; but they cannot admit that their value affirmations are not objective in nature---because they seek to always be objective. To promote both personal and communal integrity we need to find ways to integrate helpful technologies in balanced ways into the lives of peoples and communities. Technologies tend to be destructive in the absence of balanced integrations of the technologies into the reflexive lives of the communities in which the technologies are embedded. Alienated technocrats are not qualified to promote such balanced integrations of technologies into the lives of the people from whom they as technocrats are alienated. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
