Not all forms of creativity are repressed; just those which would threaten the forms of dishonesty which dominate in the society. The United States has nurtured the kinds of creativity which have been needed to win more than its share of Nobel Prizes, but repressed the kinds of technical creativity which are essential to converting scientific discovery into profitable commercial enterprises. It has also repressed the kinds of creativity which are essential to understanding and improving liberating education with regards to the nature and limitations of scientists. The two kinds of repression are related, and are essential to protecting the dishonest games of mutual self deception of the dominant community of scientists. In the United States scientific illiteracy has led the nation into taking seriously a movie actor's fantasy of a technological defense shield which the nation's most creative scientists regard as utterly impossible to create; yet those same scientists are incapable of understanding why the nation has a perpetual crisis in science education, and a perpetual crisis in conversion of scientific discoveries into profitable commercial ventures. The creativity of the nation's scientists is severely repressed by the nation's addiction to pure research. Each collusive society organizes itself to protect its dominant forms of dishonesty. In a collusive society creativity can be tolerated only within the boundaries defined by the collusive games of mutual self deception which characterize the society; but creativity in general cannot be understood or nurtured, for creativity in general is possible only when honesty in general is respected and honored as essential to personal and communal integrity. When a society is addicted to pure research based upon compulsive objectivity, it is incapable of truly reflexive behavior which is essential to making wise decisions. Truly reflexive behavior is not objective behavior, and is a threat to people trapped in collusive games of mutual self deception regarding the apparently transcendent value of objectivity. Appearances are deceiving within an addictive society, and compulsive objectivity appears to have no bias to researchaholics. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
