There are many levels at which our lacks function within our dilemmas. There are many kinds of lacks. We may be lacking in: knowledge, insight, perception, sensitivity, leadership, structure, organization, cooperation, checks and balances, integrative values and ideals, understanding, wisdom, creativity, initiatives, freedom, dialogue, listening, expression, resources, technology, vocabulary, symbols, communication, etc. A lack of one kind cannot be compensated for by "more" of something we have enough of. If we do not recognize the kind of lack which is a root of a dilemma; that lack of recognition is yet another kind of lack which we do not recognize; etc. To resolve our dilemmas we need to learn how to recognize the character of what is lacking. At a most elementary level our dilemma may be that we do not recognize that our dilemmas have to do with lacks. At another level our dilemmas may be that even though we recognize that some lack is at the root of our dilemma; we do not know what particular lack is the root of our dilemma. We may try to deal with our dilemma by eliminating the wrong kind of lack; and so go to an unwise excess in futile efforts to get "more" of what we think we lack. Misguided perception of what is lacking can lead to tragic patterns of behavior. Our dilemmas may be rooted in our lack of ability to formulate questions regarding what is lacking. Well formulated questions can play essential roles in leading us to the answers to essential questions. We may lack the skill in formulating creative questions which can help us avoid tragic patterns of well intended idealistic behavior. Even if wise questions have been formulated, have been articulated in our consciousness, and maybe even discussed, we may lack the recognition (individually and/or communally) of the importance of the particular questions. We may lack the ability to recognize which of the many questions are the wisest questions to focus our attention upon. Lacking such a wise focus we may not concentrate upon the right kinds of things, situations, issues, relationships, etc. We may lack insights based upon wise questions for lack of insight into which questions are most important. Some individuals may have formulated wise questions and carried out an appropriate analysis based upon the helpful leadership of wise questions; but we may be lacking the social contexts which are essential to the process of giving such questions and analyses social power to make the needed difference in our dealing with our dilemmas. The kind of lack which blocks creative cooperation may be the lack of an appropriate social context. The lack of an appropriate social context cannot be compensated for by any excess of knowledge, technology, resources, sophistication, experts, etc. Often our dilemmas are rooted in unrecognized, unknown, unquestioned, un-analyzed, and un-socialized lacks. There are many levels at which the lacks which participate in our dilemmas operate. To resolve our dilemmas we need to recognize and come to know through wise questions and analysis the kinds and levels of operation of our lacks; and to deal with our dilemmas and lacks by creating and making effective use of appropriate social contexts within which we can be creative through dialogue and cooperation. Many of our tragedies are rooted in our lack of recognition of all the essential elements of wise coping with dilemmas. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
